Statement of work

Genetic Make-up looks at behaviour, genetics, identity and image, dealing with how the potential loss of inherited gesture is prevented through continued use and exposure to generational behaviour. The work uses only women within the family addressing gender stereotyping. I want to discover how the influences of the people around us project onto our own lives. I invade the closeness within a family, intruding on their private space and publicly displaying it, forcing the subjects to represent themselves in front of a camera - showing the audience aspects of themselves they perhaps wouldn’t normally show. The work consists of portraits comparing the hereditary appearance of a generation within a family and a video piece to display manner and gesture.

Vernon House in Nottingham was where I and seven other colleagues held our exhibition from May to June 2010. The photographs below show both examples of our work and the work that went into set up and take down. This after Poppy is one of the greatest achievements of my life. The work I displayed held the following statement.

Poppy Louise Julie Smith born 17.04.2010

At 7pm Saturday 17th April my Partner David and I welcomed our first daughter Poppy to the world. I was welcomed very quickly to a world of sleep deprivation and unconditional love. She is spectacular, not even a photograph can show this little girls beauty.
